Goranî: the Soranî song

Goranî: the word for song in the Soranî-speaking world.

In the Soranî-speaking parts of Kurdistan, goranî simply means song, and the word carries a whole musical world: the classical, maqam-rooted art song of masters such as Adnan Karim; the immense folk legacy of Hassan Zirak; and the polished pop of voices such as Zakaria Abdulla. Searches for goranî kurdî and related phrases run into the tens of thousands monthly in Arabic-script Soranî and Latin transliteration together, though much of this listening lives on video platforms rather than the open web. This section documents the goranî tradition in both scripts, so that the Soranî half of Kurdish music is as findable as the Kurmancî half.
