Şakiro

Şakiro is the most celebrated dengbêj of the twentieth century, remembered by many simply as Şahê Dengbêjan, the king of dengbêjs. Working in the Serhed region of Bakur, he carried the unaccompanied epic style of Kurdish oral tradition to its peak: long kilams of love, feud, migration and mourning, sung with a voice of extraordinary range and control. His recordings, passed from hand to hand on tape for decades, are today streamed by a new generation, and search interest in his name remains higher than for almost any living Kurdish artist.
