Nizamettin Ariç, born in 1956 in the Agirî region of Bakur, began as a celebrated young voice and was forced into exile after singing in Kurdish. In Europe he grew into a composer and film director: his feature film Klamek ji bo Beko (A Song for Beko, 1992) is a landmark of Kurdish cinema, and its music showed how Kurdish melody could carry cinematic scale. Across albums and film scores he has built a body of work that treats Kurdish song as high art without losing its village roots.
